There are a lot of tips, tricks, and techniques that can contribute to your writing efforts. But it really all comes down to doing it.
Simply put: if you want to be a writer, then you should write. If you want to improve your writing, write more.
Writers also read about writing, and talk about writing. And fortunately for us, Mitch Joel and Jeff Goins talked about writing for about 45 minutes on Mitch’s most recent “Six Pixels of Separation” podcast episode (normally more directly focused on marketing, but always interesting).
It’s a great discussion about writing – what is unique, challenging, and rewarding about the practice – from two popular and prolific non-fiction writers. There are a lot of good thoughts about the craft. Mitch and Jeff each cite some great quotes from other popular authors, and each also shares some great thoughts of their own. If you’re a writer (and you are), it’s worth a listen.
